Design and Layout Specifications
- Size of the poster: A2
-
Make it clear how viewers should read the poster.
Posters are usually read from left to right and from top to bottom.
Number panels or connect them with arrows for guidance (see Figure 1 for example).
-
Leave some open space in the design.
A clean, uncluttered layout is easier on the eyes and mind.
Lettering
- Text should be readable from a distance. Preferably use Times New Roman or Calibri.
- Title lettering should be large and in all capital letters.
Visuals
- Visuals should be simple, bold, and clear.
-
Make sure that any visual can stand alone
(i.e., graph axes are properly labelled,
maps have north arrows and distance scales,
symbols are explained, etc.).
- Use colour to enhance comprehension, not to decorate the poster.
-
Make sure that the text and the visuals are connected.
Figures should be numbered in order of when they are first mentioned in the text.
Each visual should have a brief title
(e.g., Figure 1 – Location of study area).
Text
-
Keep the text brief.
Blocks of text should not exceed three paragraphs.
(Viewers won't bother to read more than that.)
Use Text To
- Introduce your poster
-
Cite and reference any sources of information other than your own,
just as you would do with a research paper.
The ‘References Cited’ section is placed at the end of the poster.
-
Simplicity is key. Keep to the point, don't try to cover too many things.
-
When you begin to make your poster, first create a list of the visuals
that you would use if you were describing your project with only visuals.
Write the text after you have created the list of visuals.
Awards & Recognition
- Posters will be evaluated by a committee of experts.
- Winners will receive certificates and prizes.
- Participation certificates will be provided to all valid participants.
